A Resumé

Dear Si-Fu,

Many muddied waters have become clear during this extremely informative weekend. Years of frustration, of finding one’s way in the dark and of despair over not understanding the purpose of Chi-Sao are a thing of the past, and I now finally know where this feeling of unease came from that so often gave me concern when practicing and teaching Chi-Sao.
Moreover, the importance of having a teacher who really knows what he is doing, and is also prepared to impart his skills to his students, becomes even more obvious.
For even if Grandmaster Kernspecht is successfully able to teach WT instructors how to "feel", it still remains to be seen whether they will be prepared to open-heartedly pass on what they have learned.
I speak as somebody who has been "once bitten", for at the time it was the intuitively felt "vitality" of Chi-Sao with Sifu Fries that mesmerised me and others to the extent that the voice of reason was drowned out.
In reality I do not see it as Grandmaster Kernspecht’s task to "do all in his power to ensure" that the essence of Chi-Sao is actually passed on by those who have had the privilege of learning or experiencing it from him.
Grandmaster Kernspecht’s message at the theoretical seminar on Friday was:
"The real purpose of WingTsun is self-defence."
No doubt this statement sets the scene for a radical rethink by the nowadays top-heavy EWTO community. What interests the writer is whether this statement really reflects the view of Grandmaster Kernspecht, or whether it is merely "bait" intended to lead many a WT-follower back to the right path.
